Referendum in Maine Hydro-Québec initiates legal proceedings to protect its commitments under the New England Clean Energy Connect project
Montréal, Québec – November 5, 2021 – Further to the filing of a lawsuit by its American partner, Hydro-Québec is also challenging the November 2, 2021 referendum initiative on the development of electric transmission line projects in Maine. Yesterday, Hydro-Québec presented a motion to the Maine Superior Court to intervene in the case in order to submit a number of legal arguments. Notably, Hydro-Québec wishes to see the constitutional protections provided by the State of Maine and the United States recognized with respect to its contractual obligations with U.S. companies and the State of Maine.
About the New England Clean Energy Connect project
This power line is the result of a regional collaborative effort designed to meet the climate challenge that stands before us, and one that remains part of our long-term vision.
Over the past three years, the New England Clean Energy Connect’s environmental and economic benefits have been recognized by federal and state regulatory agencies, which issued construction permits following a rigorous independent process.
Hydro-Québec is committed to supporting the transition to a clean energy future, both within and outside our borders. Our vast network of nearly carbon-neutral hydropower reservoirs can act as a natural battery and help integrate renewable intermittent energy sources efficiently and affordably, thereby contributing to the decarbonization of the U.S. Northeast power grid without compromising reliability.
