Diesel spill in Nunavik containedHydro-Québec working with local communities
During the night of August 1 to 2, a diesel spill occurred on the site of the generating station that supplies the community of Ivujivik in Nunavik and was quickly confined. On Sunday, Hydro-Québec also contacted representatives of the Ivujivik community and will keep them updated on any developments in the situation. A Hydro-Québec liaison officer, who is fluent in Inuktitut, is on site.
As soon as the spill was observed, Hydro-Québec set up confinement measures and notified the Ministère du Développement durable, de l'Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques as well as Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The company is providing the authorities with all of the necessary information.
For the moment, preliminary evaluations indicate that approximately 10,000 litres of diesel were spilled. A specialized team arriving on site today will review the preliminary evaluations. Measures to recover the hydrocarbons and to clean and rehabilitate the site are underway and will continue in the coming days.
It should be noted that the generating station is operating normally and continues to supply the community with electricity.
