Press Release

Construction Starts at Judith-Jasmin Substation in Terrebonne

Hydro-Québec and the city of Terrebonne cast the first shovel of dirt today in the groundbreaking ceremony for the 735/120/25?kV Judith-Jasmin substation construction site, located north of the 640-Côté-Est industrial park.

The substation will accommodate a new line coming from Chamouchouane substation, in the Lac-Saint-Jean region. As part of this project, Hydro-Québec will build a network of underground conduits some 24-km long, in order to meet the growing demand for electricity in the regional county municipality of Des Moulins. Commissioning work for the substation will start in 2018 and end in 2019.

The project represents an overall investment of 240 million dollars for Hydro-Québec. “This project will have a positive impact on the reliability of the metropolitan transmission system and on our capacity to meet the growing needs of the sector,” says Martin Lavoie, Project Manager at Hydro-Québec.

Hydro-Québec and the city of Terrebonne would like to thank residents and local organizations for their involvement in the public participation process. The opinions, suggestions and recommendations shared with us helped us find an optimal solution for the region. “The choice of location reduces impact on farmland and forests. Combining the infrastructure north of Highway 640 will spare us from having to build a substation near residential areas. And, of course, this new infrastructure will help promote the development of an area of Terrebonne that has grown significantly in recent years,” said Terrebonne Mayor Jean-Marc Robitaille. Hydro-Québec sees in its projects an opportunity to contribute to the development of host communities, especially through its Integrated Enhancement Program, which grants eligible organizations funding equivalent to 1% of the initially authorized value of the new electricity transmission facilities, to be used toward initiatives that benefit the community.
