Positive decision in Maine: Land Use Planning Commission gives the New England Clean Energy Connect project the green light
Montréal, January 8, 2020 – Maine’s Land Use Planning Commission (LUPC) has granted certification to the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC) interconnection project.
Hydro-Québec is pleased with the decision. LUPC commissioners have determined that the NECEC meets a series of regulatory criteria, notably in terms of environment and recreational development. This certification is a prerequisite for a permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
"Other authorizations are required for this project but this is a step in the right direction" said Hydro-Québec CEO Éric Martel.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Maine Public Utilities Commission have already given the project the go-ahead.
Remaining authorizations required for the construction of the interconnection are:
- Maine Department of Environmental Protection
- United States Army Corps of Engineers
- U.S. Department of Energy
- ISO New England, which oversees the operation of NE’s power system
